Skin Secrets – What Is Your Skin Trying to Tell You?!

From the naked eye, we may be fooled into thinking our skin is perfectly healthy. However, add a blacklight into the mix, and our skin may reveal infection, damage, and more!

A Wood’s lamp uses a blacklight to reveal bacteria, changes in pigmentation, dehydrated skin, etc. Use the Wood’s lamp in a dark room and depending on the person, you may see different colors or patterns appearing on the skin.

Check out what happened when we tried out a Wood’s lamp here at Mason Anthony School of Cosmetology:

Here you will notice a shade of purple covering most of the face. The purple illumination reveals extremely dehydrated skin. If the Wood’s lamp shows a lot of purple, a standard recommendation is to drink more water and apply moisture to your face through a hydrating lotion.

The illumination on this individual reveals brown spots, which means she has suffered sun damage or hyperpigmentation. The recommendation for sun damage is Vitamin C or Retinol, which stimulates the production of new skin cells. And of course, everyone should always apply SPF to protect their skin!

Look closely on the chin, upper lip, and nose and you will see orange specks of light. This shows bacteria, or where an individual may suffer from acne. Developing a regular at-home skin care routine or visiting an Esthetician for an acne-based facial is a great way to fight acne-causing bacteria.
