How to Succeed as a Massage Therapist
4 Inspiring Tips from Licensed Massage Therapists
Ready to get out there and destress the world with your brand new magic hands? Great! Obviously you need to enroll in the massage therapy program at Mason Anthony to get a first class education in massage. But before you head out into the world to practice your craft, we have a few inspiring tips from LMTs that have gone before you. We spoke with several Mason Anthony Massage School graduates to get some advice and pointers for newly licensed therapists looking to make a living in the art of massage.
Advice from Massage Therapists
1. Take the Curriculum Seriously
You never know which part of the program will benefit you in future work. We spoke with one student who remembers a complicated technique that was outside her comfort zone and challenged her. One of her first clients after school requested the very technique and she was glad she had the knowledge in her memory banks. There are often aspects of the program that appeal to you less than others, but the goal is to become a well-rounded practitioner so you can meet the needs of each client.
2. Continue Learning, even after Graduation
While we work hard to teach you as much as possible during your courses at Mason Anthony, the human body is a complicated instrument. You will always learn a bit more with each client and each session. Be open to the process and let learning be a lifelong part of your career. This will make you a deeply compassionate LMT and help you build ongoing trust with clients.
3. Don’t be afraid to ask clients questions
The art of massage is both a therapy and a practice. It involves give and take, empathy, and above all communication. It’s important to get comfortable asking questions to direct the session. Most clients aren’t sure what they need and certainly won’t ask. Ask them questions about their pain, their daily movements, and their goals for the session so you can get a better sense of what’s causing the issues and how to make the most of the work.
4. Mind the Business Basics
The license is only one detail controlled by the market and the state. It’s important to also get your business registered with the state and to acquire the necessary liability insurance to protect yourself in your professional dealings. As a professional, it’s incumbent upon you to be aware of the laws and regulations on massage and bodywork in your state. Finally, you should always be marketing and promoting your practice with social media, traditional networking, and other business best practices to stay relevant and in a mode of growth.
Remember, the goal is to build a lasting career and a successful business practicing your craft. This will be a journey of learning, relationships, and professional growth. Embrace the journey and remain open to possibilities.
If you’re interested in a career in massage, the first step is to enroll in the Mason Anthony Massage Program to get the education you need to get licensed in Ohio and begin your career.
