Follow These 4 Simple Tips To Build a More Successful Massage Therapy Practice
Communication
You and your client can set up a professional relationship through clear communication. This doesn’t mean that you tell your client what to expect from you. This means that you speak clearly, asking pertinent questions. Try asking “What do you feel would help you the most?”. Framing the question this way allows you to gauge the needs of the client without asking what you can do to help them.
Your client intake form will give you a brief understanding of what your clients need but listening to your clients’ needs will give you a much more in depth idea of your clients story. Make sure to pay attention to any medications they are on and how they affect day to day life.
Show your client that you were listening by reframing their response. Keeping your responses professional and ethical will build a strong cohesive relationship. Take notes on all of their responses, these will come in to play when they rebook.
Set a Peaceful Environment
At the end of the day, your massage client has come to you to relax and free themselves from stress, pain or just find a moment of zen in their lives. Ensure that your practice and environment is free from unexpected situations or triggers that would deter your client from finding their level of peace and comfort. Clients should not have to hear cell phones or other devices being used or going off during their treatment. Make it enjoyable and uniquely calming experience every step of the way; from the moment they walk in, to their brief stay in the waiting room, to the massage room, while on and off the table and all the way to the POS…Every chance you have to interact, every chance you have to create a memorable (yet peaceful) experience, make it happen!
The Return Client
We all hope that we have bonded with your clients enough that they re-book. In order to keep the relationship that you have already worked to build, make sure that you refer back to the notes from the previous session. Does your client have stressful situations going on? Has their lumbar situation that you discussed previously gotten better or worse? Asking your client direct questions about your last encounter lets them know that you were listening, building confidence in your connection with them.
Healthy Boundaries
Why are boundaries a must? Boundaries set a clear expectation of what is desired from both you and the client. This sounds confusing and difficult, but in all actuality will become a standard set of tools for you to come back to. Try your best to steer clear of extreme emotions. This can leave you feeling emotionally drained and can come through to the client.
Leave any judgements, extreme emotions, and/or annoyances outside of your treatment room. It is time for you to take a dynamic step forward in your relationship with your client that you have built through communication and trust. Client relationships are the backbone to creating a thriving career and retaining your clients.
Remember :
Building meaningful relationships with your massage therapy clients is pivotal to expanding your client base. Creating the environment of trust with your client allows them and you to set what you can – and cannot – expect from your massage therapy.
