The Perfect Hairstyle for You

Haircuts and styles are a human universal; we’re all constantly signaling to one another something of who we are with the way we wear our hair. Much like your facial expression and presentation, a haircut and style says a lot about your personality. It’s one of the first things people see (and judge) when they meet you – so it’s important that your hair represents you well!

The perfect hairstyle for your own look is one that flatters and compliments your personal style, which means no one style is ideal for everyone. We each have our own unique look that brings out the goddess within. When the stylists in the Mason Anthony Cosmetology Program are deciding where to take a hairstyle for a client or for themselves, they take a few key factors into consideration.

The Shape of Your Face

Each human face takes on one of these six basic shapes; round, square, heart, oval, diamond, and rectangle. Obviously we all have our own features but generally we fit into one of these overall shapes. Each facial shape has some ideal styles and cuts that compliment the contours of the head and this is usually the best place to start when deciding which look will work for you.

Round : Shorter cuts and cuts that add volume to the crown of the head, often with a center part
Square : Cuts that fall just below the jawline to round out facial angles
Heart : Cuts with bangs work well here, particularly long sweeping bangs to the chin
Oval : All styles work for oval faces, especially those with sections that break up the face
Diamond : Styles that accentuate the curves of the face and downplay sharp angles
Rectangle : Styles with layers are key, short or long, adding some width to the face

Your Hair Type

As we all know, hair comes in so many different types of thickness, curliness, and volume. Stylists categorize hair using names and numbers on a spectrum to capture the main categories of hair. The most important details to consider are your hair’s curliness and thickness. This determines a lot of what’s possible for daily wear.

Hair curliness comes in four classifications; straight, wavy, curly, and coily or kinky. When classifying hair by volume, we’re looking at how much hair you have, its general thickness, and hair follicle size. Obviously we all have some combination of these characteristics in our natural hair and, while we may want to alter what Mother Nature gave us to suit our style preferences, it’s best not to go against the grain too much. Working with your hair’s natural tendencies will help you find a style that is truly you.

Work with your stylist to determine what you can do with your unique type of hair and how best to showcase it to the world. For example, tight curls are great in an updo where straight hair shines in a simple bob. Get inspired by your own hair and style it for your own unique look.

Consider Styling Time

While some styles are fabulous, they aren’t so practical for daily wear and care. Some hairstyles may only require a few minutes to manage each morning, while others can consume a half hour just to get under control and presentable. It’s important to consider your lifestyle to make sure the style you choose is manageable after you leave the salon.

Choosing Your Own Hairstyle

While it may seem like the possibilities are endless, once you start to narrow down your options by considering what works best for your hair type, face shape, daily care, and personal style, you can really hone in on the perfect haircut to make your personality shine. A great hair stylist who really knows you and your personal style can be a great asset to maintaining the perfect look over time.
